IR HELP NEEDED!

I just purchased an IR lens filter for my Canon PowerShot XS10 IS and can't figure out how to take pics with it!
When I took a few test shots outside, they turned out dark and grainy and pretty monotone. The camera set on Auto. The filter is a 52mm IR760 Digital Filter.
Any help would be so very appreciated! Thank you!
